Overview Design means getting the Evanston Main Street into top physical shape. Capitalizing on its best assets, such as historic buildings and pedestrian-oriented streets, is just part of the story.
Functions An inviting atmosphere, created through attractive window displays, parking areas, building improvements, street furniture, signs, sidewalks, streetlights, and landscaping, conveys a positive visual message about the commercial district and what it has to offer.
Design activities also include:
Instilling good maintenance practices in the commercial district
Enhancing the physical appearance of the commercial district by rehabilitating historic buildings, encouraging appropriate new construction, developing sensitive design management systems, and long-term planning
Leadership Fred Coles serves as the Committee Chair.
Objectives The Evanston Main Street Board of Directors identified the following objectives and goals for the Design Committee:
Create and develop graphic identity
Update master plan, including public spaces
Update and create requirements and policy for Revolving Loan program
Prepare education and public relations materials regarding the program
Develop a review process for participants
Education of stakeholders
Signage incentives and requirements
Partner with the city’sPlanning Departmentand building inspector and the Historic Preservation Commission
